HOW TO IMPROVE CONCENTRATION IN STUDIES?

Our brain has the capacity to concentrate in only one aspect at a time.

Let me give two examples:

1. When you see a popular movie in the T.V, and side by side studying your lessons, your brain will prefer ONLY THE ACTIVITY THAT IS MOST INTERESTING AMONG THESE TWO.  So, it will record the happenings in that movie and skip recording the contents of text book.

Thus, when you do two assignments at a time, whatever you read even for 24 hrs will not be stored by brain in its internal memory.

So, DO ONLY ONE ACTIVITY AT A TIME.  TILL YOU COMPLETE YOUR STUDIES, CONCENTRATE ONLY IN STUDIES, NOT IN FRIENDSHIP or GAMES or ENTERTAINMENT.

2. When you keep a piece of paper even for one year under sunlight, it won’t burn. But, if you focus the same sunlight using a lens, the same sunlight burns that paper within seconds.  Why? Because, when the sun light was distracted, it has no power.  If the distracted sun light is focussed on a single spot using a lens, it gains power and burns the paper.

Similarly, when your thoughts are distracted, your brain has no sufficient power to record the learnt contents.  Whereas, if you focus your attention  ONLY IN STUDIES, forgetting all other activities, your brain applies its full power and record the learnt contents deeply.  So, it will not be forgotten for long.

HOW TO AVOID FORGETTING THE LEARNT CONTENTS?

When you revise the learnt portions as many times as possible, your brain will store them in its internal memory and it will never forget it.  For example, you can remember the driver of your 5th std (Class) school bus even now, because you were seeing him daily while going to school.   So, the repetition or revision is more important in studies.

Most of us read once and we feel that we have understood.  But, it will be forgotten later.  As per the god given nature of brain, if you read any topic tonight at 10 p.m, your brain forgets 15% of it the next morning itself.  But, after one month, your brain would have forgotten 85% of it and only 15% will be remembered.  So, you must revise every chapter atleast every 10-15 days.

Reduce your time in entertainment and concentrate ONLY IN STUDIES.

For some students, their mind will induce them to love the opposite sex or they will be disturbed by bodily feelings.  If you give importance for such (natural) thoughts in this age, you can not concentrate in studies, as those thoughts will be more interesting than studies and hence your brain will record those thoughts only.

If  you speak to the successful persons in studies or profession,  you will find some common principles among them. They are:

1.They are aware of the available time and the assignments in front of them. This enables them to balance their  schedule.

2. They thoroughly analyze what  are the steps to be followed to complete  a task before them and plan when and how to do and achieve them.

3. Knowingly  or  unknowingly, they do their duties as explained in  BHAGAVAD GITA.

Eg:

(i) Do your assigned duties  effectively dedicating their results to Me without any ego  but with the Self-Consciousness. (3.30)

(ii) We can’t escape from the results just by escaping from our duties (3.4)

(iii) No one can remain even a single minute without doing anything. (3.5)

(iv) One has to work  atleast to take care of his / her body!  ((3.8)

(v) You must work atleast  as an example to others to follow you. (3.20)

Concentrate most of your time for studies.  Spare a few minutes (say, 30 minutes daily) for worshiping god and reciting some manthras/ slokas/ prayers. This is enough for you while studying.  If you devote more time for prayers and less for studies, that is not adviseable, as given in the above quotes of Bhagavad Gita.

Such an effective performance will improve your concentration and place you in a comfortable position. So, start now.  Analyze and plan what to do to score high and apply in your day to day studies.  Also refer our other posts.
